You Have an Autism Diagnosis. Now What?
For most families, getting a formal autism diagnosis is an exhausting journey of waitlists, clinical questionnaires, and uncertainty. Once the evaluation is complete, the hardest question is often: Where do we go from here?
At BloomKidz, we are built for this moment. While we do not perform initial medical diagnoses, our integrated center is designed to take the handoff from your diagnosing physician and give your child a supportive place to grow.
When to Reach Out for ABA Therapy:
You have a formal Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnosis from a developmental pediatrician, neurologist, or child psychologist and were recommended for ABA.
You are currently on an evaluation waitlist and want to understand insurance coverage, scheduling, and what integrated care looks like so you are ready when the report arrives.
Your child is struggling to communicate their everyday needs, leading to intense frustration, tears, or behavioral distress.
Daily transitions, unpredictable schedule changes, or sensory overload are creating daily strain for your child and household.
You want an integrated team where ABA works hand-in-hand with speech, OT, PT, feeding, skilled nursing, and specialized academics under one roof.
Demystifying the Acronyms
Pediatric therapy often comes with an overwhelming alphabet soup of clinical terms. Here is what those letters actually mean for your child:
ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis): An evidence-based science that focuses on how learning happens. Modern ABA uses positive reinforcement and encouragement to teach practical, real-world skills.
BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst): A master’s- or doctoral-level clinician who designs, supervises, and continuously adjusts your child’s individualized therapy plan.
RBT (Registered Behavior Technician): A certified professional who works directly 1-on-1 with your child every day to carry out their therapy plan.
SBT (Skill-Based Treatment / Practical Functional Assessment): A gentle, trauma-informed approach that teaches children how to safely communicate their needs, tolerate being told "wait" or "no," and handle daily disappointments without distress.
ACT / AIMs (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy): A mindfulness-based framework that helps children develop emotional flexibility, accept big feelings, and take actions aligned with what matters to them.
Who Is Working With Your Child Every Day? (Understanding the RBT)
For many families entering therapy, the term "Registered Behavior Technician" is completely new.
Parents often wonder: Who is this person in the room with my child?
A Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) is the dedicated behavioral professional who delivers your child's direct, 1-on-1 therapy day in and day out. If a BCBA is the architect who draws the blueprints for your child’s care, the RBT is the builder on the ground bringing those blueprints to life through play, connection, and guided practice.
What an RBT Does:
Builds Trust First: Before working on hard goals, an RBT spends intentional time "pairing"—learning what your child loves, establishing safety, and building a genuine bond so therapy feels engaging rather than stressful.
Delivers 1-on-1 Instruction: Every minute of your child’s ABA session is spent with their dedicated RBT, turning clinical goals into playful, natural activities.
Collects Real-Time Data: During each session, the RBT tracks progress, communication attempts, and regulation milestones using specialized clinical software so the clinical team can see exact trends.
Reinforces Other Disciplines: RBTs coordinate directly with on-site speech, occupational, and physical therapists so that speech vocabulary, sensory breaks, and motor exercises are reinforced all day long.
Training and Clinical Oversight:
RBTs are not untrained aides. Every RBT at BloomKidz must complete intensive behavioral coursework, pass a comprehensive national board examination, undergo state background and fingerprint clearances, and maintain active CPR/First Aid certification. Furthermore, licensed BCBAs provide hands-on, ongoing supervision every week to observe sessions, coach the RBT, and refine techniques.
